Message 3612 - Posted: 14 Aug 2011 | 13:12:04 UTC

OS: Lion

After follow the steps to the letter, including running the sudo script with the following conformation:

walt:~ timrogers$ sh ./EnablingVirtualBox.sh timrogers admin
Checking if there is a BOINC client running...
BOINC is not runnig...
Setting up the BOINC installation ...
Enabling BOINC to work with VirtualBox...
override r-xr-xr-x timrogers/admin for /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/MacOS/BOINCManager.virtualbox? (y/n [n]) y
mv: rename /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/MacOS/BOINCManager to /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/MacOS/BOINCManager.virtualbox: Permission denied
BOINC set up correctly.
walt:~ timrogers$

I tried running the Boinc manager which gives the following status:

Processing Suspended: Benchmarks Running...
Retrieving Current Status...
(ERROR) No work available to process…

I thought Bonic would download a couple of files for the VB to run at least - but nothing.

I have deleted reinstalled everything again - but no luck

Any ideas?

Great to have you on board! At the status page of the project http://boinc01.cern.ch/test4theory/server_status.php you can see how many tasks are available for processing. If that's zero, then you have to be patient.
The massive grow in attached users is giving some problems, don't forget that this is a beta project, things can go wrong...

That is a useful link - thanks. I guess what I'm really looking for is a way to confirm that my setup is working.

Even if there are no jobs to run at present, shouldn't there be a disk image or something downloading for the virtualbox?

Tim,

Your computer is requesting work and has in fact received several tasks.
They've all crashed with a Compute Error within 20 seconds of starting. Another Mac user is in exactly the same boat you are in and getting exactly the same errors you are, namely "VBoxManage: error: Failed to initialize COM!".

Please read this thread and my last message to xSprinterx. It will explain a lot, I hope. Maybe keep an eye on that thread to see if someone posts a solution to both your problems.

.. though nothing since. The odd thing was that it did through up a message saying it couldn't find the VM.. and when I look the VM (all 14gb of it) had gone. Created a new one but I think I'm going to try installing the manager again.. All very odd.

What do you mean by it? What exactly threw up that message? Please remember we can't see your screen and we haven't seen every error/glitch/message so we need you to be very specific and detailed when you report things.

Did you try to create a new VM? You don't have to do that and you should not do that. BOINC will take care of that for you.

Yes - believe it or not I am aware you can't see my screen. If I'd intended to give you a detailed report of the problem rather then an overview I would have.

However, I believe it was BOINCManager that threw up the error that it could not find the virtualMachine. Something along the lines of 'Error cant find VirtualMachine at /path/.../etc. When I looked at the path the VM that I created before (which worked fine) had gone from the folder. So, as before, I created another one (blank, no OS). There have been no jobs available since so I cant report of the effectiveness of the measure.

I strongly believe this error to be in the Virtual Box window, since BOINC doesn't do anything other than detect whether you have Virtual Box installed yes or no in 6.12, and some extra things in the very buggy development 6.13s.

It does not detect or figure you have a virtual machine running or not. For that Virtual Box would have to be integrated into BOINC (Manager) and although this is going to be something for the future, it isn't being done yet.

Hi Jord,

You are probably right - I was a little preoccupied with other work at the time so I didn't take much notice. As you say its still pretty buggy so we can't be to hard on it - and even so it is still an impressive bit of software.

Hi Marc and welcome to the project.

Your list of T4T tasks confirms you did receive a task. It might take a while for it to start. Has it started yet? If not then perhaps you have T4T suspended in your list of projects in BOINC manager or perhaps suspended the task accidentally.

Did you run the Enabling VirtualBox script mentioned in item 2 on this page?

I had not run the install virtual box script before

But I have now and reinstalled boinc and T4T still doesn't run

Left it overnight and it has a high project share, should have run if it could.

At this point I'm frankly un-inclined to spend more time on this. Not that important to me, I'll just wait until it's ready for primetime

Thanks for your interest in T4T. If you wish to wait and participate at a later date then you are very welcome to resume work on the project at that time.

I just want to inform you that the task in question did run but crashed shortly after it started. It appears a few other tasks were issued to your computer but they crashed too.

T4T runs very well after you get past the install procedure. Since you did not run the enabling script, previous tasks have crashed and left a few files that should normally be cleaned up. If you follow the cleanup procedure in the first post in the "VirtualMachine cleanup" thread in the Number Crunching section of the main message board, the next task you receive probably won't crash.

Before you do that, however, I would like to check to make sure the enabling script ran properly. The "your username" parameter must not have any spaces in it therefore if your username is Joe Smith, for example, you should use the short form of your username which would be Joe in this example.

If there is no output from the enabling script, that means it encountered an error. If it runs correctly it will say something like "VirtualBox is now enabled".

I don't think it's necessary to reinstall BOINC or VirtualBax at this time but if you do reinstall VirtualBox you must run the enabling script again.

If you don't want to put more time into this I suggest setting T4T to No New Tasks or detaching from T4T.

I will ask Bill & Patsy to help you. I run Linux not OS X and now I am at the limit of my knowlege about setting up T4T on OS X. Bill & Patsy are experienced, very helpful OS X users.

Hi Marc.

I've never looked for that folder. All I've ever had to do to clean up bad VirtualBox VMs (and I've had a lot of them) is to open the VirtualBox.app application and use the Remove command (right click, or pull down the Machine menu). Sometimes you have to use other commands, like Pause, to enable the Remove command. Then, each time, for each machine, I next select the option to remove all files. So far it's always worked. YOU NEED TO CLEAN OUT ALL OF THOSE PESKY FAILED VMs! Then be sure to quit out of the VirtualBox.app application. It is not supposed to be running during normal operation.

Once we get you up and running, then, as Jujube said, T4T runs very well, especially if you're using the latest 6.12.xx stable versions of the software. (Don't try the even newer unstable versions.)

Hi Marc,

Good! That's progress.

So, now I'm going to take you literally and let's see if this is a clue. You said:

I had not run the install virtual box script before

But I have now and reinstalled boinc and T4T still doesn't run

The sequence of the BOINC install and then the script -- in that order -- is necessary. The script must be run (just once) after BOINC is installed, to adjust certain BOINC parameters so that BOINC can run with VirtualBox. On the other hand, VirtualBox can be installed at any time. (It's just sitting out there waiting for somebody to send it some work, and doesn't care about when it gets installed.)

So, please reinstall BOINC (highly recommend version 6.12.35) (leaving BOINC in the location in the Applications folder where the installer puts it - do not move it), then run the script again, and let's see if that does the trick.

It does indeed seem to have done the trick. Not sure if it was the original sequence (I've had Boinc running for years) or something else.

Thanks

That's good news, Marc. May I suggest looking at the first post in the "Configuration tips for BOINC and Test4Theory" thread in Number Crunching. As you can see, T4T is not your average BOINC project and tips in that post might help.

I had never seen this before adding T4T to Boinc

Have you moved BOINCManager.app (which is normally OK)? In my experience, for T4T to work, BOINCManager.app must remain where the installer puts it (top level in the Applications folder).

I don't know why that happens, but I know how to solve it: you need to re-run the script for Mac OS X.

Cheers,

Daniel
